Continuously advancing technology often means more and more systems of different types being incorporated into vessels of all sizes, whether being added through refits or incorporated into new-builds. Each new system must find a space among the existing ones and often must interoperate with them. All of this increasing capability usually brings more complexity, higher costs, and lower reliability.
